Morgan pointed out in the forums yesterday that League of Legends has actually surpassed World of Warcraft as the most popular MMO out there right now. Some of the huge numbers include 11.5 million monthly players, 10.5 million hours played every day, and over 4 million players every single day. Those numbers are massive WoW-type numbers. Has Blizzard’s golden egg finally hatched and people started dropping hip?
Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 800,000 subscribers last quarter, following the loss of 300k subscribers announced last quarter and 600k loss from the quarter before that. This brings us to 1.7 million subscribers lost in the last 3 quarters. Some things they made note of on the call:
- Most of the subscriptions were lost in China.
- There is normally an increase in subscriptions around December.
- The decreased profit came from all of the games in development and no launches occurring.
- There will be at least two major releases next year.
Regardless… those are impressive feats for LoL and Blizzard may actually be on it’s way to being replaced. We’ll have to see how long LoL can hold their figures up in the 11 million range considering WoW was the most popular MMO for 7 years now.
