League of Legends: Most Popular MMO

League of Legends

Morgan pointed out in the forums yesterday that League of Legends has actually surpassed World of Warcraft as the most popular MMO out there right now. Some of the huge numbers include 11.5 million monthly players, 10.5 million hours played every day, and over 4 million players every single day. Those numbers are massive WoW-type numbers. Has Blizzard’s golden egg finally hatched and people started dropping hip?

Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 800,000 subscribers last quarter, following the loss of 300k subscribers announced last quarter and 600k loss from the quarter before that. This brings us to 1.7 million subscribers lost in the last 3 quarters. Some things they made note of on the call:

  • Most of the subscriptions were lost in China.
  • There is normally an increase in subscriptions around December.
  • The decreased profit came from all of the games in development and no launches occurring.
  • There will be at least two major releases next year.

Regardless… those are impressive feats for LoL and Blizzard may actually be on it’s way to being replaced. We’ll have to see how long LoL can hold their figures up in the 11 million range considering WoW was the most popular MMO for 7 years now.

WoW’s 7th Anniversary

WoW 7th Anniversary

Blizzard posted on the WoW blog a little earlier yesterday that the 7th anniversary was coming up and we’d have a fun new item to play with just for logging in!

“World of Warcraft turns seven on November 23, 2011! It’s been a truly incredible seven years, and we’d like to thank you all for joining us for yet another fantastic year. To celebrate, players who log into the game between November 20 and December 3 will earn a feat of strength added to their Achievements and a “Celebration Package” item. Using your item will get the celebrations rolling by shooting off fireworks*, applying a (visual only) tabard to your character, and granting a 7% bonus to experience and reputation gains while active.

We look forward to another year of adventures ahead and many more to come!

SWTOR NDA Lifted

SWTOR NDA Lifted

GregZeschuk on the official Star Wars the Old Republic forums posted yesterday afternoon letting everyone know that the disclosure agreement that everyone signs when they’re invited to test the game (NDA basically means you’re not allowed to disclose anything about testing the game other than telling people “I’m testing, yes”) has been dropped and we’re now freely allowed to talk about it. That means we’ll have some good updates about SWTOR starting to show up on this frontpage. I’ve personally been beta testing for over a year and have had several others in our group testing for the past few months with me. A couple of us even had weekend invites to beta test, so we’ve got a lot of opinions about the game.

We’ll be starting up a SWTOR section in the forums for discussion about the game.
