Microsoft Buys Minecraft for $2.5b

Microsoft Buys Minecraft

Wow… didn’t see this coming and thought the rumors of it were out in left field. It was announced today though on Mojang’s website that Microsoft has purchased all of Mojang (mainly Minecraft, but the Mojang name and stuff as well) for a whopping 2.5 billion dollars.

So the big question is – what does that mean? Well nothing right now. According to the announcement, the majority of the team will probably continue to work on the game as usual. Updates will continue as usual. They don’t know the distant direction Microsoft will want them to go in, but for now there’s not much likely to change. So that means we won’t be seeing microtransactions or a metro-interface in Minecraft any time soon *snicker*. Notch has said though that he’s leaving Mojang after the purchase is finalized. His letter sounds a lot like Curt Cobain’s letter about how he didn’t want to become some big name and be famous and just wanted to make music because he enjoyed making music – except with video games.

It will be an interesting thing to watch post-acquisition. It’s either going to go down in history as an example of how a huge company can buy an indie gaming studio and not ruin their games, or it’s going to be the biggest example of big companies buying out indie studios and ruining them and everything that they make that people enjoy from a small indie studio.

GTA V for PC Date Change

The release date for GTA V for PC has been pushed back to January 29th 2015. While a bummer, it’s a likelihood that Rockstar is wanting to push out the new content for the consoles before working on porting everything over to the PC. I just hope they’ve been working on it and aren’t just going to rush to get the PC port done sloppy at the end. Check out the official statement for some more info on the range of major visual and technical upgrades that the Xbox One and PS4 versions will be getting as well.

Twitch Begins It’s Downfall

Twitch Censoring Audio

Twitch has been bought by Google – we all knew that and it’s kind of old news. We assumed the worst for Twitch because while Google buying your company typically means you’ve got all kinds of new resources at your disposal – we’ve seen the kind of stuff that has happened with Youtube.

Twitch has announced some changes it’s making for VODs or Videos on Demand. VODs are saved livestream videos that you can go back and watch at a later time. One of the changes is that videos will not be saved forever, but rather only 60 days for premium members and 14 days for regular members. Highlights will be able to be stored indefinitely but they’re limited to 2 hours each. This has been quite the thorn in the side of a few Speedrunners and will end up with people splitting their past broadcasts into multiple highlights so that they’re saved indefinitely or just uploading them to youtube immediately after the stream ends.

Twitch will also be censoring VODs for infringing copyrighted sounds and music. Currently they state they are not scanning live broadcasts and isn’t any automatic takedowns of live content currently in place. We’ve all seen how well the automated copyright bots work on Youtube and it’s no surprise that Twitch is already experiencing false positives left and right. Even Twitch’s own Twitch Weekly broadcasts are being flagged and censored. Even the DOTA 2’s VOD of the international has been censored for having music from DOTA 2 in the video. People are having their VODs muted left and right for having in-game music that is triggering the automatic copyright flag.

Bring some popcorn because this is getting buttery.
