Planet Explorers

Planet Explorers

In what I can only describe as a mix between a Star Wars Galaxies setting using a Minecraft sandbox and some cool tower defense turrets, Planet Explorers looks to be one of the coolest Kickstarters I’ve seen in a long time. According to their Kickstarter page, you’re a stranded colonist on an alien planet and you (the player) get to change the terrain in anyway, create new objects in any form, and do it anywhere.

The gameplay will be in 3rd and 1st person perspectives and players will be able to customize their character, combine and create weapons, vehicles, and buildings and make a multitude of base structures, turrets, etc. At the same time, players will have to defeat multitudes of enemies of varying intelligence and defend the remnants of the colonists. It’s not just a sandbox though, it’s an RPG, so it will feature a full story arc complete with missions and side quests. Planet Explorers will feature a single player story line as well as random single and multiplayer adventure maps. Multiplayer, both through LAN and online, will be featured prominently including but not limited to build mode, adventure mode, cooperation mode, and versus mode.

If you’re not a fan of Kickstarter and instead want to back it with your vote in Greenlight, check out their Greenlight page.

Unclaimed World

Unclaimed World is an upcoming extra-terrestrial colonization and survival game by a two-person studio called Refactored. “Pedersen: Lars, our programmer, after trying Dwarf Fortress once, started Unclaimed World as a spare time project just for fun.” says Morten Pedersen the other half of Refactored. Dwarf Fortress is a pretty complex and deep game – anything inspired by it is probably going to have it’s own share of depth.

The survival aspect for instance; you don’t want to just kill every animal you meet. Instead, you could follow it for a while and see if it leads to to more food sources. You can relocate your camp from the starting “crash site” if food is scare or the enemies are too harsh. You can set traps, build fences, craft weapons like spears and machetes. If you do decide to attack and kill animals for food – don’t do it too close to the campsite or it might attract other creatures of prey. Rock Paper Shotgun recently did an interview with the team to find out a little bit more about the game and it’s definitely worth your read if it sounds interesting so far. I haven’t the slightest clue about a release date but I’m looking forward to it.

Starbound Updates

For those of you who have been following the development and progress of Starbound closely, this may not be completely new news for you, but for those who may have forgotten about the game or have been distracted by some of the other awesome games that have come out recently, there have been a few updates – unfortunately still no release date though.

Starbound Character Creator

The Starbound character creator has had some updates and now offers a wide variety of color and style combinations so you can go ahead and pick yourself a look you like and also see what some of the styles other races have to offer. (must be registered on forums to use)

They’ve given out some previews of what navigating through the universe of Starbound will be like. You can preview planets to see if there are any valuable resources there, if the surface can be walked on or not, and how far away it is (make sure you have enough fuel to get there!) It looks like a pretty cool system and you can read more about it here.

Starbound Newsletter

And last but not least is the Starbound Newsletter. This will primarily be a way for you to stay informed on the happenings in Starbound’s development and most importantly – the release date! You’ll be the first of your friends to know when they give a date that they will be releasing Starbound. Check it out and sign up!
